Don't Wait for Symptoms:
Why Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives
Expert insight from Dr. Ulric D. Duncan, MD ABOM — Delta Gastroenterology & Endoscopy Center
"Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers we know of — and yet it remains the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The reason is simple: too many people wait for symptoms that may never come until it's too late."
That's the message Dr. Ulric D. Duncan, gastroenterologist and founder of Delta Gastroenterology & Endoscopy Center, wants every patient to hear this March during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
The Silent Threat Most People Don't Know They Have
Colorectal cancer — which includes both colon and rectal cancers — is unique in that its early stages often produce no symptoms at all. There's no pain, no blood, no warning signal telling you something is wrong. By the time symptoms do appear, the disease may have progressed to a stage that is harder to treat.
"This is exactly why screening matters so much," says Dr. Duncan. "We can find polyps — the abnormal growths that can become cancer — and remove them before they ever turn into anything dangerous. A colonoscopy doesn't just detect cancer early. It can actually prevent cancer from forming."

Why Screening Now Starts at Age 45
Major medical organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have lowered the recommended starting age for colorectal cancer screening from 50 to 45. The reason is a troubling trend: cases are rising among adults under 50 at a rate of about 2% per year.
"We're seeing younger patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and that's deeply concerning," Dr. Duncan explains. "The new guideline to start at 45 reflects where the data is pointing. If you're 45 or older and haven't been screened, please make that appointment today."
For individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or certain conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, screening may need to begin even earlier. Dr. Duncan recommends speaking with your physician to determine the right timeline for you.
What Are Your Screening Options?
Screening doesn't have to feel intimidating. There are several approaches, and the best one is simply the one you'll actually do:
The gold standard. A physician examines the entire colon and can remove polyps immediately during the same procedure. Typically recommended every 10 years for average-risk patients.
A simple test done in the comfort of your home that detects blood in the stool. Recommended annually. A positive result requires a follow-up colonoscopy.
"There's truly no excuse to skip screening today," says Dr. Duncan. "Whether you prefer a colonoscopy or want to start with an at-home test, we have options that work for every patient's comfort level and lifestyle."
